Two in One Day

Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett both died today.

What must it be like to come to the end of your life and enter eternity with that kind of resume?

I saw a thing on Jackson's heart attack yesterday. Grievous. If ever there was a life that cried out as indication of desperately needing the Lord Jesus, it was his.

(I've pondered whether to comment and hope that this comment doesn't come across as pious or snarky or off-base. That's not my intent)

Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett both entered eternity (presumably) in no more precarious or sinful state than I, if it were not for the imputed righteousness of Christ which clothes me. I am a worse sinner than either of them. The apostle Paul was the self-appointed chief of sinners. Presuming that they were not regenerate, they did not deserve hell any more than any of us in our unregenerate state.

(this probably wasn't your main point but when I read your short blog entry yesterday, that was my first thought, with all due respect to your original intent.)

Tim,

Good to hear from you. Your comment is much appreciated. I completely agree. We all deserve hell and our only hope is Jesus life and death for us. I marvel that there is any sacrifice sufficient for me. I believe it only because God said it.

My point was that life matters. The way we live our lives is a testimony to what we believe. It writes, in effect, a resume of faith.

I heard (but have never verified) that J. Frank Norris laid on his death bed and said, "I hate to meet God with the life I have lived." Paul on the other hand said, "I have fought the good fight. I have finished my course. There is laid up for me a crown of righteousness."

Between the two, I think the latter is far better, as I am sure you agree. I think the former must surely be the sentiment of Jackson and Fawcett.

My post originally had another ending, quoting Piper that not wasting your life was not just a catchphrase, but a cliff he walks on every day with trembling.

I pray that when my life is over I have more to show for my Savior than a title like "the King of Pop" and all that went with it. Spare me from bigness. Make me faithful.

Thanks for reading and commenting. It's always welcome.

Please pass my regards on to Mike. I haven't heard from him in a while. The Tigers are looking good though, so that should make him happy.
